In a previous life I had my own restaurants, both in England and abroad.  More latterly I had a dance studio. I then started work as a youth & community worker and obtained my a BA (hons) Degree from St Martins College Lancaster at the grand old age of 50. I now have 30 years experience of working with children, young people and families in Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre.

I managed the Millennium Volunteers Programme for 8 years, setting it up from a standing start when it was first introduced to Blackpool in July 2000. Previously I had worked at the Tate Gallery Liverpool as their Community Curator working with disadvantaged  groups across Merseyside. I undertook research, and delivered high quality community and training events.  These ranged from talks and workshops to conferences and symposia for Tate Liverpool visitors, as well as Community Exhibitions in collaboration with the communities I had worked with.

After I gained my teaching qualification I delivered Community Development training and Youth Work training for Blackpool and Fylde College.  I am a volunteer myself with My Town Tiggers a local charity that supports children and young people with autism. I am also a Trustee of the Claremont First Step Centre Blackpool, Streetlife Homeless Charity Blackpool.

Invest in Youth Key Worker

I have a lot of experience of working with young people in our local area. I have worked in housing, residential care and the Prince’s Trust in Blackpool. I have a passion for helping young people realise their potential and really enjoyed all of my previous roles in this sector. URPotential is where I started my youth work journey when I signed up to become a volunteer at a local youth group eleven years ago. This led to me completing a degree in Health and Social Care, so I am very happy to now be joining the team. Outside of work, I am passionate about exercise and this is a big part of my life. I like to go on long walks and I also have a little dog called Mitzy who likes to come along too.

Nina Beavers

LGBT Coordinator

I’m the LGBT+ Coordinator for young people and families in Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde. I have been involved in Youth and Community work since 1988 when I became a volunteer for the Childrens’ Society and the Youth Service. This work pushed my buttons and I realised what I wanted to do with my life.  I whisked myself off to St Martins College Lancaster to complete my Professional Community and Youth Work Qualification in 1996. There’s been plenty of ups and downs and plenty of people who have believed in me when I never believed in myself, they got me here, and inspired me to do the same for others.

I’ve worked in a variety of formal and informal settings from centre based to detached, and everything in between! I’ve been a Foster carer, and a Barnardos Supported Lodgings volunteer. I believe in equality, fairness, justice and people – you get the picture!  I embrace new experiences and all that young people teach me every time I work with them.  Life is a learning curve, where anything is possible.

David Smith

Volunteer Digital Champion

I am a volunteer at URPotential on the ReachIT Project.  I run I.T drop- in groups on Tuesday mornings at the URPotential office, Wednesday mornings in St. Annes and one on a Friday afternoon at St. Peters Church in Blackpool.

I started this volunteering role as I enjoy helping people become more confident in using laptops or using their own devices that they sometimes bring to a drop in with them.  I help people get online by using the Learn My Way training package, this is such a great way to help others with developing their I.T skills.   Seeing the difference these new I.T skills have made to people’s lives is truly priceless.
